Hope is for photo display to complement monument
It is a process that began 30 years ago.
The Margaree cenotaph
John Hart and his brother Lane who had spent nine years in the Canadian Armed Forces were discussing the war vets in their area when they realized there was no monument to pay tribute to the men and women who served their country in the armed forces in the great conflicts.
They contacted the local veterans who were very receptive to the idea of erecting a monument, and on March 6th, 1986, an account was set up to take donations.
Everyone began fund-raising, from the Legion to the school kids, and with no government help they were still able to raise over $7,000.
The monument was unveiled on June 6th, 1987.
On one wing are the names of the vets who served in World War I. On the other wing are the vets who served in World War II, and the centre panel has the names of those who never came home.
The vets are all from the North East Margaree area, and there are about 140 names on the monument.
Each November 11th, wreaths are laid at the monument following the church service.
Last week, John Hart told The Oran that while it is a good thing that all the names are there, few people, only family, have faces to go with the names.
So he suggests that an attempt be made to find photos of the 140 people whose names are on the monument.
So far he has collected 34 photographs.
If you have a photo of one of the soldiers whose name appears on the monument call John at 902-248-2758 or email him at firstname.lastname@example.org.
He points out that he wont keep the original photo because it is an easy process to scan it.
He hopes to gather all the photos, but is that possible? Well see!
Where will the photos be placed? That is still in the discussion stage.
Our oral history is out there, and these soldiers helped write it, Hart said. We owe it to the vets to honour them like this.
Here is the vet list.
